Microsoft is Laying Off Journalists for AI

The company is planning to run its network by using artificial intelligence-based robots.
The multinational technology giant, Microsoft is all set to lay off several journalists and editors working at its multiple organizations. Till date, the company has already laid off 50 journalists who were earlier providing their services in news production. The company is planning to utilize artificial intelligence for picking content and news. These content and reports picked by artificial intelligence will be presented on different news apps of Microsoft along with Edge and MSN.com. The workers who have lost their jobs due to the decision taken by the company is part of the SANE section of Microsoft. The laid-off workers were providing their services at contract basis at SANE stands for search, ads, news and Edge.

 Meanwhile, a spokesperson of Microsoft said that the decision is not the result of an ongoing health outbreak. He explained the company is evaluating its business and so it is quite apparent it needs to increase its investment in some areas. As the spokesperson, he further said since the company is investing in some areas quite more and so redeployment in some regions is evident. While the company is saying that the current layoffs are not related with the ongoing health outbreak the media all across the globe are publishing the news regarding the plummeting revenues of the company through various sources including TV, newspapers, etc.

The news regarding 50 layoffs by Microsoft was first confirmed by the Business Insider. The media channel said that the layoffs are not only limited to only these 50 people but also it will affect the international scenario. Amidst all, The Guardian also reported that at least 27 people would be thrown out of their job in the UK. Also, The Guardian reported that further, the company has decided to not to employ humans anymore to curate content on the homepages. Besides, the company has decided to use robots and artificial intelligence for picking content and news for its several workplaces. The US-based technology giant is in the business of news and media for more than two decades since its launch in the year 1995. The company launched its news-related activity in the year 2017 reveals that almost 800 news editors are working for the company all across the globe for its 50 various locations.
However, the company is gradually moving to adopt the technology based on artificial intelligence for different news related work at Microsoft News. Also, the company is encouraging its journalists and publishers to make the utilization of artificial intelligence. The company is using robots and artificial intelligence-based technology not only for scanning the content but also for filtering it and to get suggestions for accurate photos to be paired with the content. Moreover, the company is experimenting with artificial intelligence in different sectors to get the best out of it. The workers laid off were responsible for several things such as maintaining the editorials, planning content for various sites and many more.
